LinkedIn Profile vs. Resume: Key Differences

Your LinkedIn isn't just a digital copy of your resume. Learn how to optimise both for maximum impact.

One of the most common mistakes job seekers make is copying their resume word-for-word and pasting it into their LinkedIn profile. While the two are closely related, they serve entirely different functions in the recruitment ecosystem. Treating them as identical documents severely limits your job search potential.

1. Audience and Intent

Resume: Targeted and Specific.
You send a resume to a specific person (or ATS) for a specific job. It is a highly curated document meant to prove you meet the exact requirements of a single job description.

LinkedIn: Broad and Discoverable.
Your LinkedIn profile is a public, networking-focused landing page. It needs to appeal to a broad range of recruiters, industry peers, and potential clients who might stumble across it through a search.

2. Tone and Voice

Resume: Formal and Objective.
Resumes are written in the third-person "telegraphic" style. You do not use pronouns like "I" or "my." It is strictly business.

LinkedIn: Conversational and Personal.
LinkedIn is a social network. Your "About" section should be written in the first person. It's the perfect place to inject personality, explain your career journey, and talk about your passions.
Example: "I am a digital marketer who is obsessed with the intersection of data and human psychology..."

3. Length and Detail

Resume: Ruthlessly Edited (1-2 pages).
You have limited space, so you only include experience that is strictly relevant to the job you are applying for. Older or irrelevant jobs are heavily summarized or removed entirely.

LinkedIn: Comprehensive.
LinkedIn has no page limit. You can (and should) include your entire work history, volunteer experience, certifications, and recommendations. Recruiters often look at LinkedIn to get the "full picture" that didn't fit on your resume.

4. The Power of SEO

Your resume only needs to pass the ATS scan for the specific job you applied for. Your LinkedIn profile, however, is constantly being indexed by LinkedIn's internal search engine (Recruiter Lite/Corporate).

Recruiters actively search for passive candidates on LinkedIn using keywords. Therefore, your LinkedIn Headline and About section must be heavily optimized for the keywords of the job you want, not just the job you have.

Summary

Think of your LinkedIn profile as your career's website, and your resume as a customized sales brochure for a specific client. Keep your resume tailored and concise, and let your LinkedIn profile be the vibrant, comprehensive story of your professional life.
